I have worked in education for over 10 years across secondary, further and higher education, with a background in teaching Drama, English and Creative Arts subjects. 

My PhD in Drama led me to explore the role of creative arts in supporting wellbeing and subsequently, the benefits that this can bring within different education settings. I am passionate about the positive impact bringing together creativity and education can have on individuals and communities, and am now keen to be an advocate for wellbeing and creativity within a primary school setting.

I currently work in adult education services for local government, coordinating and delivering wellbeing-based adult learning programmes. In this role, I also lead on quality assurance processes, which means I am experienced in exploring both the quality of teaching and the learner experience. 

Since 2023, my daughter has attended school and is thriving, which has strengthened my belief in the importance of being actively involved in education and supporting the school community.

Professional attributes, experiences, areas of expertise and what you bring to the role:

I have lived in the area close to the school for 12 years and find it a wonderful place to live with its nature reserve, water ways and thriving community especially around the memorial hall and Library which make it an idyllic environment for bringing up children.  I have 3 daughters at the school and currently (yr22/23) they are in years 1, 4 & 6 and they all enjoy it very much.

My day job is a professional design engineer which often involves identifying and tackling the root cause of problems not sticking on a plaster. Subsequently this approach may mean helping people understand an uncomfortable truth or make an unpopular decision (a bit like the planet has to with global warming). I feel I have the strength of conviction, the clarity of understanding and also the diplomatic skills to help the school when sometimes difficult decisions are necessary. 

As a child I was allowed a lot of freedom to explore and learn from experience. I do not believe children should be wrapped in cotton wool and totally isolated from risk. My two older girls attend the local scout group and as a family we go cycling, camping and walking (admittedly it’s usually to Jenno’s).  

While child safeguarding is of paramount importance, it cannot go so far as to inhibit a child’s physical and mental development and in risk assessments, I sometimes feel I can be a moderating voice in a world which can often be overly risk-averse. 

I think we have a fantastic school and am determined to help keep it that way. I am not afraid to ask difficult questions where necessary but mostly be supportive, inclusive and hard-working.
